City of Taj

The History of Agra is rooted in antiquity. It is believed that Aryans on arrival built a ‘graha’ in the place which gives the city its name ‘Aryagraha’ or Agra. It is also believed that today’s towns and cities of Morena, Mathura, Vrindavan and Agra were known as Mayurvan, Madhuban, Vrindavan and Agravan, respectively.
Agra has been a great seat of power of Mugal Empire and the Taj built by emperor Shahjahan in the memory of his wife Mumtaj symbolizes eternal love. Other places which constitute an important heritage of Agra are Sikandra, Etmad-ud-Daulah and Fatehpur Sikri.
Presently, Agra is emerging as a city aspiring for recognition as a world heritage centre and as a center of economic growth with plans to setup non polluting industrial enterprises and supporting infrastructure including improvement in the present railway, highways, and air connectivity with other cities of the country.
